International Women's Day IWD

Today is about more than just flowers and well wishes—it’s about recognising the women who are shaping the future of technology, breaking barriers, and leading innovation.

For me, this is more than just a professional interest—it’s a personal journey. As a teenager, I was fortunate to participate in inspiring tech initiatives like Technovation, DigiGirlz, WomenInTech, and Techstars Startup Weekends. These experiences opened my eyes to the limitless possibilities within technology and encouraged me to keep learning and growing in the field. Seeing young women build innovative solutions, learn to code, and pitch real business ideas proved that technology is a space where we belong—and where we can thrive. That belief continues to drive me today.

Women Who Inspire Me in Tech

  • Susan Wojcicki – The former CEO of YouTube, who turned the platform into a profitable giant and championed inclusivity in digital content. Her leadership showed me how technology can amplify voices and shape digital culture.
  • Marian Croak – Vice President at Google and a pioneer in VoIP technology, which has revolutionised global communication. Her innovations have transformed the way we connect worldwide, and I deeply admire her work.
  • Reshma Saujani – Founder of Girls Who Code, an organisation dedicated to teaching young girls programming and fostering a new generation of female tech leaders. Having personally benefited from similar initiatives, I find her work especially inspiring.

Why do Women in Technology matter?

Did you know that female-led startups are actually driving significant growth in the tech industry? Research has shown that startups founded by women generate twice the revenue per dollar of investment compared to those led solely by men. This isn’t just about achieving equality—it’s about tapping into a huge economic potential that benefits everyone.

And it’s not just about revenue. Diversity, especially gender diversity, plays a key role in fostering innovation. Companies with diverse teams tend to make more balanced decisions and avoid falling into the trap of "groupthink." In a world where digital transformation is constantly reshaping industries, having a variety of perspectives is crucial for staying competitive and pushing technological boundaries.

But the impact of women in tech goes even further. Initiatives like Girls Who Code are inspiring the next generation by equipping young girls with the skills they need to thrive in IT. These programs aren’t just shaping individual careers—they’re helping to ensure that the tech industry has a steady pipeline of talented, diverse professionals ready to lead the way in the future. It’s a ripple effect that starts with representation and ends with a stronger, more innovative industry for everyone.

Supporting Women in Technology

One of the most impactful ways to support women in tech is by investing in educational initiatives and mentorship programs for girls in STEM. By providing young girls with access to resources, guidance, and role models, we can help them build the skills and confidence they need to pursue careers in these fields. It’s about creating opportunities early on and showing them that they belong in tech just as much as anyone else.

But it doesn’t stop there. Once women enter the tech industry, it’s crucial to foster inclusive work environments where they feel valued and supported. This means advocating for gender equality within companies—whether it’s through fair hiring practices, equal pay, or creating spaces where diverse voices are heard and respected. When women thrive in their workplaces, everyone benefits from the creativity and innovation they bring to the table.

Finally, we need to celebrate and highlight the achievements of female innovators. By shining a spotlight on their accomplishments, we not only recognise their contributions but also inspire future generations of girls to dream big. Representation matters, and when young women see others who look like them succeeding in tech, it sends a powerful message: You can do this too. It’s about building a cycle of inspiration and empowerment that keeps moving forward.
